{"id":840,"date":"2008-06-01T10:31:46","date_gmt":"2008-06-02T02:31:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/catchingfireflies.com\/blog\/?p=840"},"modified":"2015-04-25T20:47:02","modified_gmt":"2015-04-26T00:47:02","slug":"catching-firefl-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.catchingfirefliesgifts.com\/blog\/2008\/06\/catching-firefl-2\/","title":{"rendered":"catching fireflies &#8211; a summer&#8217;s delight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/catchingfireflies.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/2008\/06\/01\/firefly1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-full\" title=\"Firefly1\" alt=\"Firefly1\" src=\"http:\/\/catchingfireflies.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/2008\/06\/01\/firefly1.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px\" \/><\/a>This lovely article titled <strong>Catching Fireflies<\/strong> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metroparent.com\/\">Metro Parent<\/a> caught the attention of one of our crew and I thought I&#8217;d share it with you.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\"><strong>Summer nights sparkle thanks to these meadow meanderers<\/strong> <\/span>&#8211; by Jennifer Sullivan<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/catchingfireflies.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/2008\/06\/01\/firefly4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-full\" title=\"Firefly4\" alt=\"Firefly4\" src=\"http:\/\/catchingfireflies.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/2008\/06\/01\/firefly4.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>The life of a firefly seems romantic, doesn&#8217;t it?&nbsp; From about May through August, these twinkling insects can be seen dancing across the dark summer sky in search of a soul mate.<\/p>\n<p>Fireflies, or lighting bugs as they are sometimes called, aren&#8217;t really flies; they&#8217;re actually beetles.<\/p>\n<p>There are many different species of fireflies, many of which are bioluminescent, meaning they have the ability glow.&nbsp; According to Rochester Hills entomologist Dick Taylor, fireflies produce a cold light in their abdomens, caused by a chemical reaction.&nbsp; Different species of fireflies possess different flashing patterns, varying in sequence and duration.<a href=\"http:\/\/catchingfireflies.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/2008\/06\/01\/firefly3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-full\" title=\"Firefly3\" alt=\"Firefly3\" src=\"http:\/\/catchingfireflies.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/2008\/06\/01\/firefly3.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>On warm summer nights, males can be seen flying about attempting to attract a mate.&nbsp; Females, which stay close to the ground, will flash in response if interested.&nbsp; Her luminescent body acts as landing lights for the incoming male and mating takes place &#8211; sometimes.<\/p>\n<p>Even insects aren&#8217;t immune to rocky relationships, and because female fireflies are predacious, the males literally risk their lives when it comes to the dating scene.<a href=\"http:\/\/catchingfireflies.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/2008\/06\/01\/firefliesshenandoahriver_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-full\" title=\"Firefliesshenandoahriver_b\" alt=\"Firefliesshenandoahriver_b\" src=\"http:\/\/catchingfireflies.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/2008\/06\/01\/firefliesshenandoahriver_b.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Females will actually eat other species of fireflies, thus making courtship for the boys complicated.&nbsp; The females have the ability to mimic up to 11 different species.&nbsp; Taylor says, therefore being able to trick the male and lure him into her trap.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;By eating the males, the female acquires a poisonous substance which makes her distasteful to predators like birds and spiders,&quot; Taylor says.<\/p>\n<p>If the female is sincere and mating does take place, she will lay her eggs and the cycle continues. Even so, as summer comes to a close, the firefly&#8217;s days also are numbered.<a href=\"http:\/\/catchingfireflies.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/2008\/06\/01\/firefly2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-full\" title=\"Firefly2\" alt=\"Firefly2\" src=\"http:\/\/catchingfireflies.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/2008\/06\/01\/firefly2.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>So before the dance of the fireflies ends, Taylor encourages youngsters to observe these fascinating insects both in the wild and in captivity.&nbsp; Fireflies are best found in meadows, along the edges of streams and near woodland trails.&nbsp; Observing their true flashing patterns is best done in the wild, Taylor says.&nbsp; Try to find different species by observing the frequency of their flashes.&nbsp; Taylor also points out, &quot;Wherever they are flashing, kids should look on the ground to see if they see a female flashing back.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/catchingfireflies.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/2008\/06\/01\/fireflies_b.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/catchingfireflies.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/2008\/06\/01\/firefliestree_b.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Lizafirefly_b_2\" alt=\"Lizafirefly_b_2\" src=\"http:\/\/catchingfireflies.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/2008\/06\/01\/lizafirefly_b_2.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>To get a glimpse of them up close, Taylor recommends heading outside about a half hour after dusk and capturing them with a butterfly net.&nbsp; Put them in a glass jar with some damp leaves and don&#8217;t forget to poke a few holes in the top.&nbsp; Remember, these little critters won&#8217;t live past a week when captured, so be sure to always release them back into the wild.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"flaresmith\" class=\"feedflare\"><script src=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~s\/http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/catchingfireflies\/TyNo?i=http:\/\/www.catchingfirefliesgifts.com\/blog\/2008\/06\/catching-firefl-2\/\" type=\"text\/javascript\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div><div class=\"linkwithin_hook\" id=\"http:\/\/www.catchingfirefliesgifts.com\/blog\/2008\/06\/catching-firefl-2\/\"><\/div><script>\n<!-- \/\/LinkWithinCodeStart\nvar linkwithin_site_id = 944859;\nvar linkwithin_div_class = \"linkwithin_hook\";\n\/\/LinkWithinCodeEnd -->\n<\/script>\n<script src=\"http:\/\/www.linkwithin.com\/widget.js\"><\/script>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkwithin.com\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.linkwithin.com\/pixel.png\" alt=\"Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...\" style=\"border: 0\" \/><\/a>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This lovely article titled Catching Fireflies from Metro Parent caught the attention of one of our crew and I thought I&#8217;d share it with you.
