Ever wonder how the peace sign came to be?

Peace sign

The use of what has commonly become known as the "peace sign" began in 1958 in Britain by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. It
was designed by a commercial artist, Gerald Holtom who had been specially commissioned
by the CND to create something for a demonstration. The "fork" in the
middle of the circle is how the letters "N" and "D" are spelled out
using the visual signals created by extending one's arms while holding
flags. The "N" and "D" stand for "Nuclear Disarmament."

  1. The thing I liked most about the 60’s was the passion! We were young and truly thought we had the power to move mountains, change history and make the world a better place! We were passionate about questioning our parents belief systems and I believe we at least made people think and question traditional values.

  2. Non-violent protest.
    MLK Jr.
    JFK.
    Jimi Hendrix.
    Janis Joplin.
    The Beatles.
    Vocalization of equality.
    Sexual Revolution.
    The Birth Control Pill.
    Flower Power!

  3. The music! My father raised me listening to the greats – The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Velvet Underground, etc.

  4. I love all the fringe. Remember Greg’s Johnny Bravo jacket on The Brady Bunch. They put fringe on boots, jackets, purses! Love some fringe!

  5. I liked spending time at my grandparents Dairy – Brown’s Creamery in Royal Oak. It is now the David Pressley Beauty School building, but in the 60’s it was a place where locals could find all kinds of ice cream treats and fresh dairy products. My grandparents took great pride in their store and sadly it closed in 1969.

  6. I really liked the styles of the 60’s — mini skirts, poor boy sweaters, chunky-heeled shoes. If you’ve every seen “Barefoot in the Park”, Jane Fonda’s clothes are 60’s cool! I always wished I could look like that or like Patti Boyd when she married George Harrison in her mini chinchilla coat! Then came the 70’s … some of the ugliest styles ever!

  7. well, I love all the items you are giving away! I really like anything with a message and PEACE is so important. As I was born in 1962, one of my most vivid memories would probably to hear and see the Good Humor Truck comin’ down the street!

  8. I loved camping, being a girl scout, bell bottoms (I had the best pair of monster bells), and everything GROVEY

  9. a change in the way people had in the use of language and style. we need that again..the ability to speak up, the wear your hair down and to have a good time.

  10. the music, the colors, but for me the most important thing is the TOLERANCE that made all the other things possible :)

  11. Kindergarten at Danbrook Elementary in Buena Park, CA…I began my long formal education in 1969!!! Now I teach kindergarten…

  12. Martin Luther King Jr….I could read his speech everyday for inspiration and tears! And the advertising which amc’s madmen has brought back so brillantly!!

  13. Haha as you would be able to tell from my own blog i love the music from the 60s (and 70s). The doors, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan.
I also love the groupies, the fashion, all the hope for a better future, the music festivals.
I wish that i was alive at this time!

  14. The 60’s meant love songs by the Beatles……sit in’s and love in’s – plus I loved my worn out bell bottom jeans!

  15. My childhood was the 60s! Love, love the music, bell bottom pants, puffy shirts, long hair, smiley faces and flower power!

  16. another thing I like from the 60s? the music…lots of powerful messages in the music of that time. also LOVE the fashion of that decade!
