boho bedroom for our swedish daughter
This extra bedroom in our home has always been a catch all space housing various things ranging from a treadmill to ironing board so when we decided to host our fourth exchange student this school year it gave me the perfect excuse to get this room looking cute. Our previous international daughters stayed in the room where Lolo’s nursery is now and it was much easier to fill up with furniture to create a comforting .

remembering tuesday

remembering tuesday
This adorable grey fur ball entered our lives in the summer of 1998.  I was working at a wonderful day camp at Humane Society of Huron Valley and part of the camp activities included playing with some of the puppies and kittens that were up for adoption.   After just one day on the job, I knew this little lady needed to come home with me.  After a quick conversation with Steve,  we decided to adopt her on Tuesday. .

I like exchange students

I like exchange students
Three years ago about this time Steve & I made the decision to host our very first exchange student.  It was a little scary and exciting all at the same time considering it had been just us two since we tied the knot over 10 years ago.   Now we are happy to say our little international family consists of three lovely European daughters… Tessa, Jule and Iitu. It’s been over a month since .

a piece of my heart

a piece of my heart
June has become the month of goodbyes for Steve and me.  Last year we sent our first German daughter, Tessa back to Waldshut and last week Jule, our second German daughter made her way back to Berlin. Just like real kids, each of these girls were unique and special in their own ways.  Coming from a large city, Jule was incredibly independent and fearless when it came to making friends.  I was amazed by .

Tis’ the time of year where talented artists fill four blocks of 12 Mile in downtown Berkley for the 12th Annual Berkley Art Bash.  Since our first catching fireflies shop is located in the middle of it all and it is a Chamber of Commerce sponsored event,  I’ve had the pleasure of directing this show for the past nine years.  It’s hard to resist all the amazing goodies that will be for sale this .

winter wonderland windows

winter wonderland windows
Tis the season to dress up our front windows for the holiday season.  It’s something I enjoy doing… but it’s also challenging to come up with new ideas every year.  Lucky for me, an Anthropologie catalog landed in my mailbox and it was the perfect inspiration for one of this year’s scenes. Tessa & I had so much fun putting this window together last year, I thought I’d revisit the look, only using shades .

I still skype with our first German daughter, Tessa regularly and she recently recommended I listen to this great girl band from Germany called Boy. They’re a fun indie pop duo that make happy music… just my style. A review reads, “No one deserves to sit by the phone on a Saturday night. Boy, a Swiss-German girl duo, fights for our right to phone calls in Little Numbers from their debut album Mutual Friends. .

add some adventure to your year!

add some adventure to your year!
As many of you know, Steve & I hosted an exchange student from Germany last year.  Our experience with Tessa was wonderful in many ways & we really enjoyed the time we spent with her.  After she left, we actually missed having that youthful energy in our home so we decided to grow our international family by hosting another lovely German girl this year named Jule. Jule has been living with us for a .

our greatest gifts

our greatest gifts
Since we’re collecting stories & photos from our firefly fans about the greatest gifts they have given or received from catching fireflies this July, we thought it’d be fun to share our team’s favorite finds. I have bought so many great gifts, fun & sentimental, that it’s hard to choose. But given that I need to pick just one, it’s got to be my Sugarboo frame that I bought for Mark on our anniversary .

a journey to remember

a journey to remember
It’s been almost two weeks since Tessa, our German exchange student returned to Deutschland… sniff, sniff. Rewind to August 2011 – When we decided to have a 15 year old girl we didn’t know from another country live with us for 10 months, many people thought we were a bit crazy… and maybe we were, but don’t decisions like those make life more exciting, fulfilling & memorable? (I mean – some people also thought .
