When June hits, I always have a pitcher of lemonade in my fridge.  Something about that combination of sweet & tart makes it one of my favorite summer sips.  (especially when it’s mixed with iced tea)  Since lemonade is synonymous with summer, I recruited Tessa, our German exchange student one last time to help me with the shop’s windows. After I finished up our other display window, I popped in to find Tessa creating .

who makes you smile?

who makes you smile?
Tessa found this happy little ditty on spotify a few weeks ago & it has become one of my go-to summer selections. A review reads, “Sometimes there’s a song that’s just too perfectly named.  That’s definitely the case with ‘You Always Make Me Smile’ from Kyle Andrews’ Kangaroo EP .  The track, with it’s whistle line and bouncy bright vibe will definitely have you smiling.” Take a listen, give your smile muscles a work out .

4 fantastic days in northern michigan

4 fantastic days in northern michigan
It’s hard to believe our German exchange student, Tessa is heading back home in just a few days.  We couldn’t let her leave Michigan without a little tour up north so we hopped on I-75 until we hit the bridge and took in all the beauty the mitten is famous for.  One way I captured our adventure is with a little help from instagram.  If you’re also addicted to this photo app, you can .

We must admit, we were thrilled to hear that we were named Best Gift Shop by Hour Detroit voters for the 6th year in a row!  We truly have the BEST firefly fans & are honored to carry this fantastic title. I love the circus theme they chose for this year’s edition & wanted to use the cover image in a creative way.  Since the talented Tessa will only be with us a few .

bring on the bean dip

I love black beans & simple recipes that taste great so when I stumbled upon this Gracious Pantry post it was a no brainer.  Warning: this recipe makes a LOT of dip (at least 8 cups) but since I was assigned to bring chips, dip & salsa to our family’s Memorial Day going away party for Tessa, I made the full batch. (we still had left overs so taco salad is on the dinner .

Our German exchange student, Tessa only has a few more weekends in the USA so I suggested doing something a little different than the typical movie night.  So we began our adventure by heading to the local Salvation Army to hunt down some shoes… After the 3 of us found our Cinderella slippers, we searched the web for images we wanted to put on our shoes.  I went with a pink floral theme, Rebecca .

I had the pleasure of having my mom & mom-in-law come & visit us on Mother’s day this year.  We went out for lunch, but returned home to enjoy a little dessert.  I whipped up these babies with some help from Tessa the morning of & they got rave reviews by all. I do love the dessert jar trend & this recipe would work great for that, but I since I decided on making .

coloring more than easter eggs

coloring more than easter eggs
Inspired by Hey Jen Renee, I picked up some Kool-Aid packets to dye eggs with Tessa for Easter. I can’t say I was thrilled with the outcome, but they made the kitchen smell fruity & turns out Tessa loves Kool-Aid (something they don’t have in Germany)  After our little egg experiment, our conversation turned to dying hair with these fantastic bright colors.  Tessa had been admiring a schoolmate’s blue tipped hair & wanted to .

flower filled fool’s fun

flower filled fool’s fun
A few weeks ago, Tessa & her friend were looking for something to do Saturday night other than watching a movie, cruising facebook or painting their nails.  After some brainstorming, I suggested a little mischievous fun.  I remembered one night in middle school when I convinced my best friend to help me with the art of tee-peeing a few of the cute boy’s homes in our neighborhood.  It was an exhilarating experience & a .

I can’t say Tessa was overly subtle about us making a BIG deal about her 16th birthday, so the challenge was ON to make it a special one. I’m happy to say Steve & I were quite successful in throwing a fun & memorable party for a dozen of high school aged kids (not bad for jumping into parenthood starting with a 15 year old ;-)  – CHECK Tessa is also joining us for .
